It's just another pleasant afternoon in Sanjo for young Hamachan and his family. From left to right: Jingo (father), Hamachan (son), Obasan (grandmother), Mayumi (sister) and Fukiko (mother). This image is based off of a real family and their home in Sanjo, Japan. They were very kind to me and acted as my host family in Japan when I visited over the summer. If I return to Japan to study the language, this would be my home.
I was trying to emulate Miyazaki's style by painting the background and cel-shading the characters. I used an actual cel from Studio Ghibli's "Spritied Away" which I purchased while visiting Japan (quite an expensive reference but well-worth it). I think I was reasonably successful and quite enjoyed working on this piece. I will probably work in this style more often in the future.
