Artist's Comments

When I closed my eyes in prayer late last night while sitting by my bedroom window, the skies were empty. When I had finished my prayer and opened my eyes, the northern lights lay before me! I took it as a sign of God, thanked him, and rushed outside with my camera gear. It was about 34 degrees and I had nothing but my thin pajamas, robe, and slippers on. I set up my tripod, and spent the next hour capturing the aurora borealis.

This was by far my favorite image. It's of a tree in my front yard, lit from below by a floodlight. When I took the image I couldn't see the reds far above me in the sky. Though later when I loaded them onto my computer I was pleasantly surprised by the range of color my camera captured. I used my Nikon D50, shutter speed 30 seconds, f11, ISO 1600. The photo was taken from my driveway about 2am.

EDIT: This photo is currently displayed on Spaceweather.com!

I'm considering making a "How to capture the Northern Lights" tutorial. If you are interested, please leave a comment and/or send me a note!

Oh my goodness, that's beautiful. I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights... Thanks for sharing the picture and the story that goes along with it.

:giggle: And some people say miracles don't exist... Phsh! Bull puckies!

This is beautiful! I have only seen them a few times. Stunning each time.

I am glad for your miracle, it is always a blessing to see them, even in the little things in life.

Thank you for coming to take a look! You are so right about that tree! In the day it often looks so pathetic that we've considered cutting it down. I'm glad we decided against it.
